When Milos "Sharkey" Begovich was alive, walking into his namesake casino in Gardnerville, Nevada, was like walking into a museum. It was filled with Old West paintings and memorabilia, a table loaded with brass gaming chips and much more.
That table was an absolute thing of beauty.
But Sharkey sold the casino in 2001, a year before he died at age 76, to Hal Holder, and the place soon lost much of its charm. Holder eventually had serious financial problems and sold Sharkey's and other casinos he owned, including the Silver Club in Sparks, and Sharkey's closed in November 2014. But it reopened five months later under the ownership of Mike Pegram, who also owns the Carson Valley Inn in nearby Minden and Bodine's, a slots-only casino in Carson City. To his credit, Pegram has tried to keep some of the old Sharkey's in the new Sharkey's. You might have heard Pegram's name before. He owned Real Quiet, who won the 1998 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, then lost by a nose in the Belmont Stakes in his bid for horse racing's Triple Crown.
