I didn't mean two pieces of clay were put together. I meant there were two dies/molds pressing the front an back designs into the chip at the same time. What you said it correct. The excess squeed out is that little raised area on the rim. Some runs of chip were, no doubt, finished better than others. Sorry for the confusing wording.
