I wouldn't expect much effort to be put into Windows 7 maintenance since they are giving you free Windows 10. I have Windows 7, 64 bit Pro and had two updates in October, both with notification to me that they were waiting. I too use the option to select which updates I wanted installed and do it at my own convenience.
Took some time last week to look at all the comments that reviewers of Windows 10 are posting on the web. The consensus seems to be Windows 10 will be a lot better than Windows 8 (which I never bought) but that it was rushed into release and MSFT is still depending on early users to do a lot of the Beta testing. I plan to revisit it next year when things cool off a bit, even it I end up paying a little something for it.
