No idea, but I noticed it early on. The red part of the spectrum is majorly screwed up on the scanner. I even contacted Hewlett Packard about it, advising them to maybe purchase some red chips to see what the heck is going on. And no, it cannot be some chip security thing: chips from the 1970's and 1980's -- when we didn't have scanners -- do this as readily as those made today. It is definitely nothing wrong with your scanner: it is the chip.
For inventory purposes, I'm fine with the scanner, but for sales, I go with a photo,
