What turns on the NEW flag on this board?

When I run Norton Anti-virus, I frequently get 40-50 notifications of "cookies". When I look at the names of them, I don't see any that are obviously related to my activity on The Chip Board. However, when I allow Norton to delete them, the red NEW flags on posts I have not yet read all disappear. Is there a way to visually identify these useful cookies and leave them alone rather than deleting them? Less important but somewhat troublesome is the disappearance of my prefilled userid, email address, and subject when the cookies are deleted. Is there a way to avoid this as well as avoiding the disappearance of the NEW flags?

As a side issue, the NEW flags that appear when I look at 2-days worth of posts are quite useful to me and I want to continue them. Since other flags are also in Red, it would be nice to have the NEW flags some other color so I can rapidly page through the posts and stop on only those that are really new. Is there a way to change this color? Is this a function of the browser I use? Is there an option I could change on the Internet Options that controls color? I can't seem to find any.
