If it is a hot-stamp chip, first & foremost protect the hot stamp. I remember years ago, I got a hot-stamped 25 cent pink Silver Saddle chip. There was some misc dirt on the edges of one side, so I covered the hot stamp with my thumb & did a little light clean-up. When I lifted my thumb up, the hot stamp was attached to it . Another thing to pay attention to is how the chip looks after the cleaning. A lot of used older chips, after they have been cleaned end up looking faded, washed out...almost "fuzzy". Some people put a little baby oil or treatment on it & then wipe it away which pretty much restores the chip's vibrance & color.
