James I have enjoyed reading your posts on casino history and your experiences. In any group, a good discussion is healthy, as long as it is respectful and does not end up divide the group. On any given day you are not going be able to make everyone happy. If we can get the majority an organization is doing good.
As far as the banquet goes, I have found them to be very interesting & informative, (for the most part) Bob Maheu, was one of the best. But if it does not pay for itself then it should be reevaluated.
Smoking should be a non-issue. If it really needed maybe a spot can be set up in the room away from the vendors.
I don't know if lowering the price for the show will increase attendance, but maybe if we give a coupon for a refund of admission with a purchase from one dealer of $25 or more. (what every is decided) with the club crediting the refunds. This way everyone wins and maybe the lookie loos buy something.
As a volunteer, I have no complains. As far as the photographer getting dinner late, I agree make sure they are at a table that is served early. But they could remind who ever is running the dinner so it does not happen.
A cash bar sounds like a wonderful idea, if does not cost the club. Maybe the club at there table, could provide soda & water. Buy it a Costco and make a small profit if we can. I would help in doing this.
I do not know anything to make a statement on the tournaments. I have played in the past and had a good time,
I do not know how the dealer table charge is set up. I know if was lower I would get a table to sell my extra, misc., and changes in my collection. I enjoy going to Mark Britton's show in Ohio. I don't make any money but I have a good time. I'm a collector not in it for a business. There maybe other member that would do the same. Maybe just let use sell on Sat for a discount price so we don't hurt the real dealers. The club would make some extra money without additional cost.
As far as new members, we are not the only collectors with this problem, it is generational. I have written about this before and I believe this has to be done at a grassroots level where casinos are just getting introduced. I know some of use belong to local clubs maybe we can do something in areas that there are no local clubs now. I know this would require a lot of work on a few people. Maybe the club could make up a guide with suggestions to start one. Pick brains for the info. Maybe w/ help I work on the guide.
I know I don't have all the answers, and no one person can implement all suggestions from everyone. We are a small group, we have to walk the walk, not just talk. Name calling and talk will not fix anything, we need members to step up and help like Alex said. In any organization 20% does 100% of the work, I'm not sure we a close to that number, and if we are, then we need more to step up.
I know for many years I was on the sideline for many personal reasons, but in the last few years I have step up to the plate. If I was in the LV area, I'm sure I would be doing more.
James please keep writing, Alex nice to hear from you. I believe that we have a responsive board, and hopefully with all the voices being raised more members will participate and will be a round for a long time.
