I have read all the posts regarding attracting younger members. In my opinion, it is a waste of time. I love the club and enjoy meeting my friends at the conventions. I joined the club soon after it was formed (I am member #130). I have been to EVERY convention except in 2009 when I broke my leg in May of that year and could not travel. When I was young, I collected coins, stamps, baseball cards, etc. Luckily, I sold my stamp collection when I started collecting casino chips. A few years ago, I found a box of Israeli first day covers (the stamps on envelopes with the special cachet). I took them to a Stamp and Coin dealer in a neighboring town. He looked over each one carefully and when he was finished, I asked him how much he would give me for them. He replied "Nothing. There is no market for them." The young people of today seem to be only interested in electronics. They walk around with their cell phones attached to their ears and sit across from one another in restaurants, each one on his own phone.
I have 2 sons and 5 grandchildren. When I traveled and visited foreign casinos, I made sure to bring each one of them a set of chips from each casino. When I returned, I gave them the chips. They thanked me. I later found the chips spread out on the tops of their dressers or desks. My other hobby is collecting chess sets. We have a national convention every year and an international convention every 2 years. We have the same discussion at every convention, "How can we attract younger members?" My sons to whom I am leaving my chips and chess sets have no interest in keeping them. They say "Why don't you sell them now?" I reply "I enjoy looking at them."
While I really enjoy the club and the friends I have met through it, I feel that we are wasting our time thinking we can attract young members.
