Most of us are “Too Old” to understand what makes someone under 35 want to do something. We “as a club” need to quit saying “the hobby is dying” and look at changing the business model.
Is this hobby all about collecting, NO! FIND THINGS THAT BRINGS IN THE YOUNGER CROWD!!!!
1. You need to find something that attracts the younger generation. OK, the younger generation doesn’t collect, so add “non-collecting” activities to the convention which might bring them to the convention.
2. Bring in a celebrity to sign autographs or have their picture taken with them. These people don’t even need to be casino related. This is something they have done for years at home and car shows. If you bring in a “big name” person, charge for autographs.
3. Have a room where you show “Las Vegas” themed movies. One thing I’ve seen at comic conventions is they have rooms where they show television shows or movies. It gives people something to do besides walk around the bourse floor all day long.
4. Have activities that are outside the 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. window. If you’re under 35 most things don’t start until 10:00 p.m. at night. Maybe set up a club hoping “pub crawl”.
5. Blend and change the hobby to meet the consumer’s demands…..yes you can still have chip collector tables, but create a whole experience and don’t limit what the dealers sell at the tables.
6. Most events or conventions have separate websites just for that event (which tells what's going on, how many days until the event, who's going to be there). This shouldn't just be the club website but a site devoted to the convention.
7. Final Comment, WE CONTINUE TO STINK at Social Media, We have one major event each year and there was NOTHING during the convention about the convention (no twitter, or Facebook posts). We are missing the boat on this one big time!
That's my 2 cents worth.
