That's strange ... I watched the NJ show on CNN last night at midnight, and what I saw was Bourdain reminiscing about his fun summers at the NJ shore beaches and in Atlantic City when he was a kid; and when he returned to tape his show for comparison, it was snowing in the middle of winter and his videos were all shot indoors at Baltimore Grill and the Knife & Fork....still in business and doing fine. No summer beach memories in the winter of 2015 were shown last night! The main focus of Bourdain's A.C. piece was the Revel cost and failure after two years ... and the good food served at Baltimore Grill, Doc's Oyster House, and the Knife & Fork. I particularly liked the segment on South Jersey's "Piney's" and Jersey Devil folklore and Jersey cheese steaks that are much better tasting than the more famously known Philly Cheese Steaks on the other side of the bridge.
The Camden segment was somewhat depressing. Are you sure you did not confuse the Camden NJ segment of the show with the Atlantic City segment Don? What Bourdain didn't mention was that many of the old A.C. hotels that were torn down to make room for the new glass cubes (as he called the new casinos and obviously he didn't like) were firetraps, some of them were of wooden frame construction or were not up to current code standards and too expensive to fix. In fact, when casino gambling was introduced by then Governor Brendan Byrne and approved by the NJ voters in 1976, the emphasis was placed on new construction not just plaster and paint cosmetics, fixing up the old buildings that must have a minimum of 500 hotel rooms. Some exceptions were Resorts and Claridge, which were fairly well maintained at the time they were approved for casinos.
