No Eden Roc matchbooks allowed in our house!! My father was the engineer in charge of building the new wing of the Fontainebleau. You remember? The building that shaded the Eden Roc championship swimming pool and led to a great lawsuit between the two hotels? I sort of had the run of the Fontainebleau as a kid, at least for a few months. I met Ben Novack a few times, but not Morris Lansburgh. Those two dudes weren't on speaking terms, either. The Fontainebleau had The Boom Boom Room plus a ballroom which could have become a casino, I suppose, had the gambling initiative passed. And Cubby Broccoli filmed Goldfinger at the Fontainebleau and not the Eden Roc or Castaways. Nyaaahh nyahhh!
Yes, you certainly better had gone 'round the U.S. 1 Circle in Hollywood or you'd run into a whole lotta stuff inside that park. There might still have been some illegal casinos in Hallandale near Gulfstream Park as late as 1960, but I don't remember any of them. Card games were something the old-timers played in the Hollywood Beach Hotel cabana, beside the swimming pool which only the younger set used.
