I grew up in Hollywood, FL, and remember going past the Castaways many times. Didn't know it was run by the same folks that had the Las Vegas Castaways! I don't remember that gambling referendum - maybe because we were in Broward County and not Dade. The only casino I remember was the defunct Riviera on one of the Sunny Isles - all chained off and a creepy place by the late 50's. People spoke in hushed voices about it having been run by gangsters. Horses, hounds and jai alai were okay for gambling because . . . nobody could throw a race or game, right??
