You asked how a scalloped edge affected the coin mechanism. It doesn't, really. Many nations have multi-side coinage, and coin slots easily accommodate them. The outer rim tends to have the same circumference as a perfectly round coin, so there isn't a short way or a long way for the coin to enter the slot unless it's square.
