h2] The Riviera (Florida)
Here’s one I don't see on the Chipguide Florida page: The
illegal Riviera that was on one of the Sunny Isles near
Hallandale.
Red chip, 3 light blue inserts, hot-stamped "R" with
an odd hearts-and-squares mold.
The Riviera holds a special place in my memory: it was the
first casino I ever saw! I must have been about 6 years
old and visiting with my grandmother and grandfather, who
took my parents and I from their home in Hollywood to Miami
Beach via A1A. And we passed this creepy boarded-up old
building where the road going down the peninsula was fenced
off with a big chain between posts. My grandparents said
it was a casino that had been owned by gangsters, and it was
now deserted.
The building stood for quite some years (wonder who paid the
property taxes?) but became damaged in various hurricanes,
and by around 1964, I think, it was torn down. Don't
know what's there now as we moved from Florida in 1965.
Around 55 years passed, during which time I forgot the name of the
old casino, but eventually I took an interest in collecting
chips and decided to research it. "Riviera" it
was, same name but presumably not ownership, as another
Riviera Hotel in Miami Beach.
And when this chip came up on eBay, I decided to bid on it – and won!
A "red" chip would today be a $5 gaming piece, but I
don't know how it was played in the old days.

- don't know if this counts as a "harvesting
story" but you are welcome to use it if you
wish.

BEAUTIFUL MISSOULA MONTANA, IS WHERE YOU WILL FIND PARADISE FALLS CASINO. INSIDE OF THE CASINO YOU WILL FIND A SMALL POKER ROOM, THAT LOOKS LIKE THEY TOOK A SMALL BANQUET ROOM FOR FAMILIES WISHING TO HAVE THEIR OWN DINING ROOM, AND CONVERTED IT TO A POKER ROOM.
WHEN I ARRIVED AT THIS LOCATION IN MISSOULA, THERE WAS A YOUNGER LOOKING MAN COUNTING THE CHIPS, THAT I GUESSED WERE THE RACK FOR THE POKER GAMES. I ASKED HIM ABOUT THE CHIPS AND WHAT DENOMINATIONS HE USED. HE TOOK THE QUARTER, DOLLAR AND FIVE DOLLAR CHIPS AND LAID THEM ON THE POKER TABLE FOR ME TO INSPECT. I THOUGHT THAT WAS EASY ENOUGH AND ASKED IF I COULD BUY SOME FOR MY COLLECTION. HE SAID I DON’T SEE WHY NOT…SO I THOUGHT A MINUTE AND ASKED HOW ABOUT 4 $5’S 25 $1’S AND 10 $25c CHIPS? HE SAID WELL, I AM OK WITH THE 1’S AND 5’S BUT I CAN ONLY GIVE YOU MAYBE FOUR 25c CHIPS, I NEED THEM FOR THE ANTE’S. I DID NOT WANT TO LOOSE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HARVEST THE ONES AND FIVES SO I SAID, I UNDERSTAND AND I WILL TAKE AS MANY AS YOU CAN AFFORD (OF THE 25centers) AND HE SAID HOW ABOUT 6 OF THEM THAT SEEMED QUITE DOABLE FLIPPED HIM A $50 DOLLAR BILL AND HE COUNTED OUT MY CHANGE AND I LEFT A COUPLE OF BUCKS ON THE POKER TABLE AND EXITED QUIETLY.
WHAT A GREAT HARVEST AND IT COULD NOT GONE ANY SMOOTHER. I DID NOT GET ENOUGH OF THE 25c CHIPS BUT I GOT ENOUGH OF THE ONES & FIVES.

I am always trying to put things together that have some semblance of balance. Of course, that will always be in the eye of the beholder. Some of these may attract you the collector a little or a lot, no matter which way it attracts, please know I am always trying to help you out, with items you want at price that is fair. For now, I am going to do them every week, but as an unscheduled surprise feature…Thanks for looking. Reggie
If you have some ideas about compatible pairs please send them in to me. If it is possible and I happen to have the two, they will be put on the docket...reg

CHIPS AND VARIATIONS
Collecting chips is quite an adventure, there are so many ways of going about it. Everyone has an agenda or parameters that govern their collecting methods. With that thought in mind, I try to secure all variations, back up racks, UV’s, 1st series, 2nd series, etc. of any casino. Especially, the one dollar chip.
Every week, I come across a variation, or mold design, that I had not took note of before, and add it to my “Page A Day”. It adds to my total inventory and variety.
I realize this is not of any importance to many chippers. However, to those that do collect UV’s, Mold variations and chip design changes, it is very helpful; hopefully… Please email me any areas of variations and design that you think I need to address.
That being said, I am finding this less and less important in my personal collecting.
Thank you for your interest. Reggie
MANY YEARS AGO I STARTED MY POSTING, BY POSTING “A SET OF THE DAY” I THINK I HAD ABOUT 300-400 SETS ALL TOGETHER. THAT WAS A LOT OF FUN BACK THEN. AND WHEN I STARTED DOING “A PAGE A DAY” I INCLUDED BETTER SETS AS A CATEGORY.
BUT NOW; RATHER THAN HAVING MY BETTER SETS CATEGORY, I WILL START HAVING A REGULAR SET OF THE DAY WITH MY OTHER FEATURES WHEN I DISPLAY A “PAGE OF THE DAY”.
I AM REDUCING PRICES ON MOST OF THESE SETS, SOME WILL BE FACE VALUE, SO IF YOU SEE SOMETHING YOU LIKE AND WANT, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE IN SENDING ME AN EMAIL, PUTTING A SOLD SIGN ON THE CB IS NOT THE WAY TO GUARANTEE YOUR PURCHASE OR TRADE. SEE POD FOR P/H RATES. SEND ME AN EMAIL FOR ORDERS OR QUESTIONS…Reggie
