I did this last year and saved some cash. Only draw back is that you can't be continually checking for lower rates preceeding the convention. Before I figured iI had the best rate I was probably checking rental rates every day and changing companies several times.

It pays to shop but when you decide that's the best rate, go ahaead and prepay. Also locks in your actual rate so the counter guys can't upgrade you without you knowing.
