So I get up early on Saturday because there are a surprisingly large number of yard sales advertised in my favorite rich area of Nashville. I am talking Brentwood area where all of the music stars live. I hit the first sale at 6:30 AM and just don't find anything until after 9:45 AM. I thought I was going to get skunked for sure but I finally found a bag containing 5 identical sterling necklaces for $5. I wasn't sure if they were worth it or not so I got out my gram scale and sure enough it weighed well over 2 ounces. Not bad getting $35 in silver for $5. Later I was at moving sale and the guy said he had some casino chips. As he went inside to find them (he never did ) I noticed two old stamp albums on top of a cabinet. I looked through one and it was filled with uncancelled American stamps. There were also loose full pages of new stamps. A quick page by page glance told me there were at least $54 face value in stamps. He asked $50 for them and we settled on $30. I used to collect stamps before casino chips and wanted to check my ancient books to see if any of the really old stamps had much value. I crawled in the attic to find the price guide and also found two other albums that were not from my collection. I still have no idea where they came from.
On Sunday, as I watched the Titans get decimated again, I pulled the unused stamps from the album. Total? $91 in face value and I kept the oldest ones in the book. But that is not the whole story. I also took stamps from the other two albums I found in the attic and pulled another $200-300 in stamps from them. So if anyone buys chips from me or does a trade you are going to get stamps on the envelope possibly going back to the 1930's.
