Some time ago, Steve Passalacqua wrote an article for the CCTN about George Canon and Willy Musso, eventual owners of George’s Gateway in Tahoe. In his interviews he discovered that during the summer of 1946 George and Willy ran the games at the Chateau Lido. This would be during the period that Warner owned the property.
At first I assumed the date must have been incorrect because I could find no mention of these men in Florida or ever associated with the Lido. I knew from my research that Warner was DEFINITELY running the club in 1946. However, after talking with Steve it makes sense that we could both be right. Many gambling clubs would split responsibilities when they offered more than just gambling. The Chateau Lido provided dinner entertainment downstairs, with the gambling upstairs. Earl Warner would most likely oversee the total club, being the host downstairs and making sure all ran well. George and Willy could have been running the games upstairs (usually for a cut).
Not finding mention of George/Willy is also not surprising. From his interviews, Steve found that they only ran the games during the summer of 1946 (two months tops) before returning to California, and eventually Tahoe. There wouldn’t be much of footprint left for a couple of wandering gamblers.
