Although you are right enough about it being a snapper it is actually 2 shillings and 6 pence (about 12 1/2p nowadays). As mentioned by Jason, in old money there were 12 pennies to a shilling and 20 shillings to a £1 (hence 240 pennies to the pound). Hope this clarifies the value.
