Looks like a nice solution. Just check the quality of wood and assembly to make sure it can hold the weight.
8000 chips x 10 grams = 80,000 grams or about 175 pounds.
That's prox. 5 pounds per cubbyhole.

Should be OK with solid wood and sturdy gluing or nailing. However, particle board covered by a wood veneer might sag or buckle under the weight.
