Re: Beware of Fake US Silver Eagles on ebay

Replicas are not illegal. Although the U.S. has a hobby protection act, it does not apply to foreign coins (such as replica Canadian coins), foreign manufacturers, or non-coin products. The law in general does not prevent replicas, although fraud laws punish a seller when a fake is sold with intent to deceive. Copyright/trademark law may also impose remedies when protected products are reproduced. But in general, the sale of replicas is not illegal per se.

Alibaba doesn't sell fakes. It is an advertising site. If someone sold a fake here on the Chip Board, the Chip Board would have been unconnected with the transaction.

I have a problem with replicas that are not marked as "copy" or "replica," since I feel they can be resold innocently by our heirs without knowledge that they are fakes. But the law does not necessarily prevent this, and the old rule of "buyer beware" must control our spending.
