I can also think of Carole Lombard,who died in air accident in Nevada while on a bond drive for the war, 1942 .. ..... and Leslie Howard (of Gone With the Wind fame) died near Spain, his plane shot down by German aircraft in 1943; he did a lot of non-fighting work for the allies (directing film, writing, radio broadcasts).
