Just a few thoughts,
1st - how can it spread die to die--- I would think it's an "off gassing" as the die break down ... ie. 1 rotten apple ruins the rest...it permeates the container and speeds decomposition...
2nd - as in my old silver age comic collection,, back in the 1970's the library of congress started a program to de-acidify all books there by inserting them in a chamber tank and pumping a neutralizing gas to seap into all the books...to make them all stabilized... So upon reading this in a @1980's national geographic article, I decided too treat all my one hundred old comics with my own neutralizer " A lite manually applied "Baking soda" dusting of all my books... inside and out.. that was 30Years ago.. guess what they're still great...
That got me to thinking -- you smell vinegar! Acid!! why not try dusting or dipping a few dice in baking soda solution to arrest possibly an "acidic chemical reaction" that may be taking place??? I'm not a chemist and their may be no relation to vinegar smell and acidity but it wouldn't hurt to run some tests on some "less rare" die starting to show signs of deterioration.
