My brother is a thief and a drug addict. He used to break into our younger sister's piggy bank and steal pennies. He doesn't do any of that any more. Now he just breaks into stores and goes to prison every year or two.

Good luck. I can understand protecting your mother from the news, but chances are he's stealing from her too. Some people do that under the belief that relatives won't prosecute, and they're generally right.
