We went in 1997, on a big road trip. We also went to see the Cadillac Ranch, just outside of Amarillo. Cool for a nice side trip. Not too far. In the center of town, on Route 66, there is a fun area with antique shops and the famous Neon Grill (great burgers!!!). A little farther out, we also saw a sculpture as a tribute to the discovery of helium (I think it was helium - some basic element in the periodic table). The plaque said it was for the "invention" of helium! Lol. I remember having a really good time in Amarillo.
