I don't have specific knowledge of T.R. king's labor costs and chip costs, but in the fifties, labor was a LOT cheaper. Not just due to debasement of the currency, but also other things, like weaker or no unions, female workers were paid much less than males, and government didn't have many of the expensive regulations on manufacturers they do now.

I think the fact that poker chips didn't often walk out the door in those days made a difference in how much the owner was willing to pay to have a nice looking "fixed asset" in his table chips. I doubt it cost more than a penny or so in the 50's to have inlays and edge spots.

As to why California had fancier chips in those days than Nevada; I don't know. Possibly due to he fact California had card rooms (poker) while Nevada casinos had many kinds of table games. Pride of ownership of the card rooms vs. stronger profit motive for the bosses in Nevada?
