That's correct. Works are copyrighted as soon as they're fixed in a tangible form (e.g., print, digital, photograph). Registration and a copyright notice make it easier to defend but they are not required.
I'm not an intellectual property attorney, just a librarian who deals with copyright often. I may not be correct about posting newspaper articles to the ChipBoard but I think it would fall under fair use given the educational nature of the club and the limited number of articles we post.
