and most of the scans added to the database are easy to associate with TCR descriptions. The difficulty is when there are varieties cataloged that are not easy to distinguish. I was pointing out one such example in the Stardust dollar.
As I'm sure you know, emailing all collectors to get info on a single chip would be a huge task with probably little input. Many would resent being hit with hundreds of emails for chips they don't have and maybe aren't really interested in. A forum like The Chip Board has a chance of finding collectors who do have the chips of interest and may be willing to help getting the pictures to match the catalog numbers.
It has happened before that just talking about a variety and re-thinking about whether it is real has resulted in changes to TCR listings. Particularly in the case of minor color differences and the way individuals describe them, multiple TCR listings may exist where some may it's just two collectors' words for the same chip color.
I'm of the opinion that since chips do fade under harsh conditions, our reference material shouldn't try to catalog different degrees of fading with different TCR numbers. A note that faded examples exist should be enough, and the color listed in the catalog should be as close to the original color as we can determine. However, sometimes reorders of the same chip design do result in different color chips from the manufacturer. These should be listed as varieties, with different numbers, in my opinion.
I apologize if my earlier posts took you to task for adding incomplete info to TCG database. I know it's a tough job, and a lot remains to be done. You do need the raw material (scans, in this case) to illustrate the chips properly. There are quite a number of volunteers doing the database loading and in most cases, we users don't know who is responsible for loading which chip scans.
I'm trying to help, as once things get put on paper (or on screens in this case) is often very difficult to get them corrected. Hopefully there will be some response from collectors with this chip or from the catalogers who decided on the varieties to aid in this massive project.
Your efforts, and that of all those who are working with Charles to create the picture database in the MOGH are really appreciated. Thanks!
