But if you are stuck with windows 8, spend $4.99 on a program called Start8 from http://www.stardock.com/

It will restore the start button, and make it look like Windows should. Here is a screen shot of my Windows 8.1 desktop with the Start menu extended ( like XP and 7 does) . Best money I have ever spent on a program. Windows 8.1 is technically superior to Windows 7, just out of the box, it look atrocious
