So, it comes down to a matter of opinion...

What's the difference between Merriam-Webster Dictionary and the Oxford Dictionary?

I think Merriam was the person who went out of his way to remove British'isms from the
American language thus simplifying some of the official spellings. The Websters then took
it over when he died...or something like that.

To me, Webster does seem more American than Oxford...

How about misspelled vs. misspelt and spilled vs. spilt and spoiled vs. spoilt? rofl rofl rofl
