Here is a chip in two versions, long cane (left) and short cane (right):
The long cane chip has a wider ring near the edge of the chip (outside of the hat and canes) and the short cane has a narrower ring. If you compare where the cane exits the hat on the left side of the hat, there is a gap between the cane and brim of the hat on the long cane, but not really a gap on the short cane version. The brim itself is narrower on the long cane version. Also, the tip of the long cane is still above the brim of the hat. On the short cane, the tip is at or below the brim level (hard to say, exactly, and I've haven't studied it closely enough to tell).
