If they had said meteorite, I would have agreed, but an asteroid! (Asteroids travel around the Sun in an orbit between Jupiter and Saturn, for the most part.)

Meteorites, on the other hand, are celestial objects that pentrate our atmosphere and sometimes make contact with the ground. This happened just last week outside of Tucson.
