1. Safety is important. When you start collecting and accumulating 500+ matchbooks the sulfur smell can be overwhelming and IT IS A FIRE HAZARD regardless of storage devices!
2. The sulfur contained in the match head themselves can damage the integrity of the book. Discoloration and oxidation will happen eventually. This is especially true on books over 50 years old, i.e. front strikes.
3. My collection does include full matchbooks, mainly "feature" books and "print sticks". In a few cases I considered a regular matchbook so rare or fragile that "shucking" (removing the sticks) it would do damage to the cover itself.
4. The ease of storage, arrangement and display of match covers is so much easier and safer than putting full books into binders.
5. It is also much easier to view the info on a match cover rather than having to open and close the full book to view this info, to much handling will eventually damage the cover.
6. Many are interested in the matchbook as it came from the casino and consider it more valuable as an intact relic. However I have seen and noted the sale prices of rare covers vs. rare books and have made no discernible difference.
