Doug gives every bidder a chance to respond to a bid against them. For instance if you had a bid of $20 on a chip, and another bidder comes in (before the deadline) and places a bid of $25 on that same chip, he will call you back to see if you want to bid again. So the few lots that are "in contention" the under bidder has not responded to Doug yet.
Unlike eBay (which is really a timed sale and not an auction) Doug has an actual auction. Every lot goes until only one person is left bidding. The deadline was simply a time where you could no longer place NEW bids. But as long as people are willing to continue bidding, he will keep those lots open (and only to those two bidders of course).
