Some years ago, when there were many playboy collectors, the same dilemma came up.

After some investigation T. Stroh, in his Playboy catalog, " Cheques, Chips and Tokens of the Playboy casinos", explained it this way.

The First group that appeared is the first chip you show. The second group, which showed up in large numbers in 2004 are the similar but different chips to which you make reference. At the time the second group came out, the first type kept its prices and eventually increased. The newer ones were quite cheap. It was never clear as to why these chips showed up, but after many discussions, the general consensus was that these were probably counterfeit . No other explanation could be found and until no there has been no proof to the contrary.

Maybe some old collector has more insight, Ron Bayne? Richard Bernhart? Tom?

Obviously after decades, the true answer is still not certain and remains a mystery....
