Charles - please see thread started by Matt Edwin yesterday (9/26/13) to which I and Frank Stewart and Jim Follis and others contributed to.
I agree with Matt and disagree with Frank Stewart.
In the case of a better scan replacing a previous scan, if it's as easy as you say, I say have the following verbiage (or something similar).
"Originally Contributed by: Jane Doe
Current Contribution by: John Q. Public"
Or if someone wants to remain anonymous ...
"Contribution was anonymous"
Besides improving The ChipGuide and advancing the Hobby, I enjoy getting recognized for contributing a chip scan - I think a lot of other members enjoy seeing their name next to a chip as well.
Even though I want the ChipGuide to display the best possible scan, I can't help being upset when my name is dropped as Contributor when someone submits a better scan.
I've made you aware of my feelings in an email about a year ago(?) and you thought it was a good idea and said you would consider it.
By including both the original contributor and the newest contributor in The ChipGuide you encourage members to contribute scans - both first time scans and better scans.
