From what I have read, in the early bare-knuckle boxing days, the fighters would fight surrounded by a "ring" (circle) of spectators. Often the audience would get too involved in the fight, so they decided to rope-off the action. It was more to keep the fans out than keep the fighters enclosed. Using four stakes and a rope made the ring a "square", not a circle. The name "ring" just stuck.
