stand them on edge, on the scanner bed?

Lyle's scans have black around the edge of the chip, which would indicate the scanner lid left open. (I leave the lid open a lot when I'm scanning)

We have a new Canon (CIS) scanner...which I haven't a clue how to use sad ...but on our old Epson (CCD), I would stand the chip on edge, do a "zoom" preview, adjust the marquee (area to be scanned), and click the scan button. I'm sure it would work...but I can't try it now, since the Epson isn't hooked up at the moment (but will be set up to work with the laptop).
