Steve, as I noted in my response to David, you can maintain 501 (c) status with a single pamphlet issued yearly. You don't need a magazine to satisfy that requirement, and I think that painting the picture that the magazine is necessary to maintain 501(c) is misleading.
My argument has never been to scrap the magazine entirely. I think that there is not enough meat per issue to justify the treatment the material is currently receiving. If we went to partial or full color newspaper we would save a lot of money and not lose many members.
Now, if we could get high quality photos of some super-rare, hardly ever seen chips, I would say keep the heavy, glossy paper stock, and let's all drool together like we are 12 and opening up that Playboy centerfold for the first time! It has been a long time since I have seen anything like that in the mag,
and I rarely save an issue after I am done reading it anymore. This is not a swipe at anyone, I know the magazine is a tremendous undertaking, and I have a lot of respect for the work involved in producing it. Just taking a pragmatic view. Is what we get from it, in it's current state, worth what is going into it?
