The end of $5 and $25 Limited Edition chips? That's gotta be good, right? Think about it, casinos pump out those denominations as quickly as they can in the hopes that their patrons will leave the casino having paid $5 for a chip that cost them about a buck. All that extra cash is sitting in the casino cage rather than in our hobby.
If you're like me, you probably thought, "Hey, there's a nice $5 LE that I can pick up cheaply." only to eventually realize that $5 LE chips are a dime a dozen. Weekly you will find posts on the ChipBoard offering lots of $5 LE chips for only a dollar above face (or less) just so the original buyer could recoup part of their initial investment. This is why the vast majority of hobbyists collect $1 chips. This is also why $1 chips demand a high premium than any other denomination.
If $5 and $25 LEs are no more that leaves much more cash in the hobby to invest in $1 chips. Any new collectors? They're not getting pick up the hobby because of limited edition chips. They get started like many of us have, by finding that forgotten $1 chip in their pocket after a trip to some casino. Unfortunately, while Nevada may put an end to LE chips, the manufacturers will continue to push limited edition chips on other casinos throughout the country.
Limited edition chips...good riddance.
