I just heard from Mr. Spragg himself via email. He confirms that the Castaway Sportsbook Chips with sharp edges and no concentric circles are counterfeit. My question to the community is why do so many "reputable" chip dealers and eBay auctions get away with selling these counterfeit chips? Its very disappointing to me, but now I know that you have to be very careful in this hobby. I guessed I learned to do my research before buying anything, and I learned to and look very carefully at the chip scans before purchasing. Buyer beware!
As a newbie to this hobby I have purchased about 500 chips in the last 2 months and I would say that at least 4-5 have turned out to be counterfeit. I suspect many more of my "rare" chips might be. To me, this is an argument FOR Slabbing. These counterfeit chips are often very high priced, and there needs to be some official way to know what is real.
