Erik, I knew Sammy Cohen very well, spent many

day's in the race book in the 70's and 80's. My betting partner just about put Sammy out of business, with a Kentucky Derby future bet, on a calumet farm horse who was 500 to one, Gary had 200.00 to win, led till one jump from the wire. Can't remember the horses name, but Sammy told Gary if the horse held on, the 100,000.00 pay off would have caused him to shut down. In those day's he was a real bookie, high limit, and no cap on pay out. They made a mistake in racing form saying this horse was a non runner, but kept taking bets,Gary knew someone in stable that advised him the horse had a great work and was running with a shot. in those days non runners no refund, same today. I was in Sammys book at time of running, no live TV just a call off the wire. I also remember the free post cards given out, of a classic bum, with a clever saying I won big at Sammy Cohens. A lot of fun times. Many good tips from the NY guy's who would use the pay phone outside for inside info.
