One of the best ways to get an upgrade is to take a room guarantee. What that is is a guarantee that you will get the room you book OR BETTER. For our anniversary cruise NCL had a sale, book an outside room and get a balcony. We not only got the balcony we signed up for but got upgraded 3 more levels. Real nice! The room we are getting sells for $500 more than the one we paid for.
