Re: Crest & Seal?

It is not really a Crest & Seal. Back when it was made chip manufacturers called any inlaid chip without a mold design a Crest & Seal and in the old catalogs you can see that they called them Crest & Seals. Over the years (100 in some cases) chip collectors had the need to be more specific and this type of chip specifically is called die cut inlaid. To the "purest" Crest & Seal collector, a Crest & Seal is an inlaid litho covered by a clear celluliod seal but many inlaid lithos were made without the clear cover but they are still considered Crest & Seals by collectors.

In the case of your lighthouse chip and other die cut inlaid chips, the inlay is a piece of thin celluloid, just like a old time white film leader, that the design has been cut out by a die, just like the "gear holes" on the film leader were cut by a rolling die. The design was then pressed into the clay using a plain mold.

Some design Die Cut Inlaid chips were "special ordered" but most were available from catalogs, known as generic chips or more specifically Seymour Coded Antique Chips. Your Light House falls into the catagory of Seymour Coded. Still... it is a fairly scarce chip. Hope that helps.

Examples if DCI or Die Cut Inlaid:

Example of Inlaid Litho (not really a "true" Crest & Seal but more often than not referred to as Crest & Seal) The litho is worn as it is not protected by a clear "seal."
