Apartheid in Las Vegas?
Absolutely. Though I was under the impression that it hadn't started as early as the 1930's...apparently it had.
The Westside was the black section of Las Vegas. Blacks were not allowed to stay or play at the casinos on the strip...not even the performers. After their performance ended, they had to go to the Westside to sleep. Not everyone on the Westside had electricity or running water. Streets weren't paved.
The Moulin Rouge was the first integrated hotel/casino. It was also the site of a meeting that was held, in answer to the threat of a march on the strip to protest segregation, on March 26, 1960. A meeting that officially put an end to segregation on the strip.
