For a west coast urban experience, San Francisco is unique with its hilly terrain. Cable cars, good restaurants, and even a tour of Alcatraz if you want.

For a great outdoors experience, the Grand Canyon is awe-inspiring. Fly into Phoenix, then 2 1/2 hour drive to the south rim. When finished, either backtrack to Phoenix then fly to Las Vegas .... or, it's only a 4 hour drive between Grand Canyon and Las Vegas. There will be a charge for dropping off your rental car in another city, but shouldn't be too much.
