My 30 some years in Egg Harbor Township, NJ with 2-4 times a year El Nino snow storms never heard of the Self Regulating Heating Cable and never busted my water pipes.
Here in Las Vegas I got busted once already which cost me $160 to replace - parts and labor since 2006.
It was a big news in Channel 13 the other night when they were showing busted water pipes and more busted Pressure Vacuum Breakers. The house across the street who just moved in 3 months ago - was lucky he survived the first night of frigid temperature by cover his breaker with a 5 gallon pail (he came over and we talked then he went out to buy one he has a big swimming pool), one house one block me threw a rug over got busted, one house used several shopping plastic bags wrapped around. The renters did not bother to cover them simply called the landlord.
There are insulated ready made foam that I bought from Star Nursery to cover it and then I used a big deep plastic bin to double the protection.
Did not take a chance I bought the Heated Cable for $60.00 (ebay for less than $10.00), time was of the essence could not wait to bid and get busted. So far so good. Right now with 30 degrees I plug the cable to the outlet. I might not use it when the temperature gets over freezing point. I don't know how much electric I will be spending for one night use. It is under study.
Its good to know that you got good sales clerks in Canada. Home Depot is my guy.
