It looks like they are bringing home only 20% of the gold held in New York. If they asked for it all, it would cause a real hassle. From France, they want all of it send home.
It's wise to do it a chunk at a time, so long as they don't wait too long for the next shipment. As it is, Lufthansa will have a lot of flights just to transport 300 tons (24,000 bars) from NY to the Bundesbank in Frankfurt. The 374 tonnes of gold stored at the Banque de France can probably be moved hoome by armored truck, but that's still a lot of trips. Food for a good action movie: "Getting the German Gold!", as the bad guys hijack a truck-full on the way home.
