I just saw a clip on the news about Texas looking at state funded gun training for teachers. Texas just graduated 460 new gun trained teachers. Along with the training are tips to disarm, shield, and hide. Classes across Texas are filling fast.
In Texas there are (a few) districts that allow teachers to carry on premises. The school superintendent must put it before the school board, and have it approved. The ones who have it require the teacher have a CHL, apply for the on campus carry, be approved (each person is evaluated and selected by the school), attend quarterly classes and extended training, and must carry the weapon AT ALL TIMES, never putting it in a drawer or taking it off, and they are subjet to losing the privilege at any time by the school. They have NO requirement to engage in any situation, only if they feel comfortable doing so. No one has to be a hero because they have a gun.
While carrying a weapon is not for everyone, I think carrying non-lethal stun guns (the kind police carry that shoot electrified darts), may be an excellent option for some. A gunman is not very capable of shooting while convulsing on the floor. I have not (as of yet) seen this as a suggestion by anyone as an option. The more tools one has, the greater the chance for a better outcome. Guns are just one way of defense, not the only way. Banning ANY way of defense is asking for trouble......
I am for whatever it takes to make schools/workplaces/thearters safer places. Banning is like boycotting, it seldom ever works.
