A little earlier there was a post about License Plate collecting, etc. Shown in the scan is a State of Delaware "Live" license plate that sold for $742,500.00 including the 10% buyers premium.

Now the rest of the story. In the Great State of Delaware for some reason having a low number "live" license plate registered to an operating vehicle is a very big status symbol. People routinely pay $100s $1000s and $10000s for plates with 5 digits or less. The lower the # the higher the price. The # 6 plate shown in the scan was the lowest # plate to ever come on the market. I believe the plates numbered between #1 and #5 are all on State owned vehicles - Governor, Lt. Governor, Chief Judge of Supreme Court etc.

The person who bought the #6 plate had also previously bought #9 FOR A MERE $450.000.00. This sale took place about 5 years ago. I was at the sale in person and actually stood next to the agent who purchased the plate for the new owner. The sale was held in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Just to be eligible to bid on the plate - you had to put up a $50,000.00 deposit.

Bottom line no Chip has ever sold for anything near this crazy price bid by a deranged Delawarean for a low #ed plate !!
