carbonite now offers backup on external drives. i got rid of my external drive after it crashed. paid a company in wisconsin $700.00 to restore my drive. got the huge flash drive from them. plugged it in, downloaded to my internal hard drive which is automatically backed up by carbonite and never used and never will use an external hard drive!
